I’m not sure when it happened, but Hunter is a huge football fan. I think it was the packers jersey Steve bought for him two years ago. He suddenly became a Packers fan. And then an ASU football fan. He’s walked around the house with a football for some time. He throws it out in front of himself and dives into the couch.
It was fun and cute and then he was old enough (we wait until second grade to start sports) to play and I got nervous. I don’t want him to be a football player, not at all. I’m okay with flag – but my momma heart can’t handle the idea of tackle football. Judging from his genes, he’s not going to be a huge kid. But it’s the only sport he wanted to play.
He played the fall season and surprise, surprise…he’s a great player. He’s so comfortable with the ball and he’s got quick feet which meant he scored a lot of touchdowns. Unfortunately his team was not so good and they lost every single game. I thought for sure that would be the nail in the coffin of his football dreams. But he left the field smiling every game. He loved every minute. He did comment at the end of the season that he had a lot of fun, but it would’ve been nice to say they won a game. He played his heart out.
A week after the season ended he was out in the front yard throwing the football to himself and diving in the grass. I reminded him the season was over and it was time to pick up a new ball. I’m trying my hardest to introduce other sports in hopes he will love them and never beg me to play tackle!
