If you could see my desk right now you would see random notebooks and pieces of paper with fancy letters and words scribbled all over them. I often sit at my desk on the phone and let my pen run across the paper. Sometimes its the same word over and over again. Sometimes its not even a word, but just practicing how letters fit together. The fun part of hand lettering is I can practice just about anywhere.

One particular afternoon, the walls of the house were starting to cave in and the kids were “bored”. I marched outside with a bucket of chalk and told them to go at it. I got my lettering practice done in chalk on the street – 8 feet tall and 15 feet wide. Bennett was trying to see how many lines he could draw and Cannon was practicing his name. Before long we had the whole neighborhood on our driveway making works of art. No one seems to touch a bucket of chalk when they’re used and broken – but pull out a brand new box and kids will flock!
