While Hallie spends her Saturdays on the tennis court – Hunter spent 6 weeks on the basketball court. I tried getting him to try basketball last year and I thought I had him convinced – last minute he changed his mind and didn’t want to play. He really hasn’t had interest in even picking up the basketball even when I’ve asked him to come shoot with me.
But all his friends were playing again, so he finally put down the soccer ball and picked up the basketball. Not surprisingly – he loved it. That ball hasn’t left his hands – he even takes it on our walks and dribbles the whole way. I’m convinced he’ll be great at whatever sport he decides he wants to pursue.
After watching his first practice, I pulled him out on the driveway to teach him a layup. He didn’t need to practice shooting anything else but a layup. But at that age – layups are not cool – he wants to practice his top of the key shot! He’s quick and he anticipates the ball and I could tell the majority of his points would be running to the basket. Sure enough in the first few minutes of his first game he had the ball for four layups and missed three of the four. Didn’t take long for him to realize the layup would be his most valuable shot. He worked on it over and over again. One thing about him, he’s persistent and he improved significantly. It was fun to watch him play and it’s even more fun to hear that basketball hitting the driveway.
