I make homemade Christmas gifts for the kids every year and this is the first year that every body received the same gift – minky cuddle blankets. My initial plan was to make blankets for everyone. After buying almost half the fabric – I realized we have plenty of blankets in the house and perhaps only a few kids would be getting blankets for Christmas. I ran the idea by Steve and there was no hesitation – everyone gets a blanket. So back the fabric store to find the rest of the fabric.
Christmas morning, Cannon was the first to open his homemade gift and as soon as he opened it, Hallie looked at me confused, “Mom, are you sure you didn’t accidentally switch the gifts?” She wanted his blanket bad. I loved her sheepish face when she opened her own blanket that perfectly matched her room. I find these blankets all over the house – they’re loved and used all the time.
Cute, cute blankets! What are the dimensions of your completed blankets? Do they contain any kind of filling or batting? Do you just sew the two fabrics together, then reverse them? What keeps them in place – any quilting stitches or sewing anywhere for stability?
Each blanket it a little bit different in size. We have a discount fabric store that has bins of minky fabric (all different sizes) and you purchase it by the pound. So I just found pieces that were close to the same size for a coordinating blanket. It’s not easy to sew on and required a lot of pinning. I sewed them wrong sides together and then turned them right side out and then top stitched the edge. There is no batting in them (this is Arizona after all and we need lightweight blankets). I was planning on sewing in the middle to keep it from shifting but realized the static electricity between the two fabrics kept them together. Sometimes they get pulled apart if the kids are trying but it doesn’t bother me. Good luck!
Your homemade gifts are really special. I think it’s because you don’t just sew or knit or make things from wood. You have many talents.
