Still playing catch up from our summer adventures – 4th of July in Idaho. Where the weather is nice enough for shorts during the day and gets just enough chill in the evening that sweatshirts are an option.
An afternoon in the park with games, snow cones, ice cream and fried chicken.
Followed up with an evening at my brother’s house for more ice cream and cake to celebrate a birthday, shaving cream twister, puppies, paddle boarding on the pond and fireworks.
I know logically fireworks are a ridiculous idea – we burn money. And unfortunately its not like a candle where you get 12 hours of enjoyment out of it. Nope. You can spend hundreds of dollars on fireworks and burn them all in less than an hour. And yet, I love them. I love the smell. I love the boom. I love the light.
I wish we had more firework holidays – Independence day and New Years Eve are not enough (at least in Arizona those are the only legal times to light fireworks)!
Happy birthday to the USA!
I used to love fireworks to and we had only Guy Fawkes Night (Nov 5th) it was so exciting in the week building up to it. Making the bonfire and the guy. Special food, toffee apples, parkin, sausage & baked beans, potatoes wrapped in foil and cooked on the edge of the fire.
Then as I got into my 20’s New Year’s Eve started to be celebrated with public fireworks displays and then private ones.
By the time I was in my 30’s private fireworks celebrated birthdays, weddings, divorces, as well as Guy Fawkes, New Year, Religious Festivals.
I don’t want to be a killjoy, but when there are set days for fireworks you know to keep cats at home, be aware if your dog is nervous. You can prepare old people especially those with dementia.
There is nothing like the sight of a firework display, the smell, the sight, sound and the fun of the crowd.
But, you don’t get that when it’s a few going off in a neighbours garden without warning and possibly (often) after midnight. Not just burning money, but dangerous in the wrong hands, thoughtless to the impact on wildlife, pets, babies just settled, frightened old people.
I love fireworks, but lets keep the excitement of them being special by being waited for.
