Bennett is a kid who knows what he wants and his Valentine’s box was no exception. He wanted a shark. There was no need to look on pinterest, he had a plan and part of the plan was handing out gummi sharks (the valentine Hunter handed out last year) to go along with his shark themed box. We used an oatmeal canister and a light blue poster board. This took approximately 20 minutes. Bennett doesn’t mess around, he gets stuff done!
Call me crazy, but it makes my heart happy when the valentine matches the valentine’s box. It’s only happened a few times over the years because the kids choose them both but when it works out my graphic design heart is happy!
Hunter handed out fruit roll-ups this year with, “Valenetine, I like the way you roll.”
Hunter had decided on making a birthday cake for his box. Little fact – Arizona’s birthday is on Valentine’s day – I was not aware of this until Hunter completed his project. I wish I could describe an easy way to duplicate this project but we lucked out with a run to Goodwill. We were looking for a round hat box, or paper mache box. We found a couple that would work and then Hunter came across this wooden piece and he didn’t let go of it.
I’m not sure what it was used for before, but It turned into the perfect little birthday cake. To make the top, we just took some foam core board and cut a circle and then covered it in red paper with matching red paper on the side of the cake. I love it when projects morph and change into something better than originally planned.

Although this picture appears to have been taken this morning since everyone is in there pajamas – It was taken just after dinner tonight! Our traditional family Valentine’s dinner at a restaurant was thwarted due to sickness. Instead, we were all in our pajamas before our dinner of homemade french bread and chicken noodle soup – because nothing sounds better when you don’t feel well.
Today was definitely one of our more low-key Valentine’s celebrations and everyone was okay with that.
The kids were beyond excited when they found someone had heart-attacked our yard and door. Even better was they left some delicious cookies. Such a simple gesture that was so thoughtful.
Luckily, Steve and I get to continue the Valentine’s celebrations when we go out for date night tomorrow sans kids. We love them to pieces and love to celebrate with them, but we love each other even more!

I was cleaning out a closet today and I came across Hallie’s Valentine’s box from last year and I fell in love with it all over again – hence it’s still sitting in a closet because she wasn’t ready to get rid of it!
I overlooked how close Valentine’s day is until I had a couple magazines recently ask to feature some of the kids old boxes including Hallie’s gumball machine, Hunter’s lego box and Hallie’s bumblebee. (It’s funny how a project from 5 years ago can still be of any interest to someone today thanks to Pinterest!)
Hallie always wanted to start her box midway through January which gave her plenty of time to make something grand. I now have two elementary boys who don’t show a lot of interest in spending time thinking about and making a Valentine’s day box – and that’s okay too. What they are concerned with is what they’re passing out to their classmates – that’s what’s important to them!

I came across these darling cherries on the website The House that Lars Built. I originally suggested Hallie do some cute emoji valentines until she informed me that emojis were no longer cool. Noted. She didn’t have any idea of what she wanted, just what she didn’t. I happened to show her these darling cherries and she suddenly had an opinion. This is what she wanted to make. Then the thought of making those for her 32 classmates didn’t seem like such a great idea. But she had her mind made up – luckily they were easier than I imagined and they were done in no time.
