When I asked Steve what he felt the theme of our back-to-school dinner should be – he was actually pretty quick to come up with “10 seconds of courage” adapted from a quote from the movie We bought a Zoo, “You know, sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage. Just, literally, 20 seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.”
I think we have some kids that are going to have to rely on some courage this year. Hallie moving out and starting college. Hunter tackling his senior year and all that comes with it. Bennett going all in on tennis. Cannon starting junior high which at some level can be scarier than high school. And Briggs…Briggs is teetering on ruling the school, but he’s the lone Pothier left in elementary school.
Courage is on the menu!
We ate our traditional Panda Express while talking about what it would look like to be courageous as they each stepped outside their comfort zones. As always, we ended the meal with fortune cookies, taking turns reading our fortunes aloud. But this time, we added a little twist – we decided which person each fortune seemed meant for and passed them around until every fortune found its rightful home.
We are more than ready for another school year!
Side note: I had some helpers prepping for the dinner. Years ago, I was introduced to a candy store called Sweeties. They have every candy imaginable and I was always able to find candy to coordinate with our themed dinner. Hallie had some friends hanging around the house when I needed to go grab candy and they were happy to join in our little field trip. I found what I needed and they found their own bags of treats.
